When Less Is More
W
During the day, the crisp white walls and plentiful natural light provide the homeowners with a bright, well-lit environment. For the evening hours, Pang added a light trough that supplies ample light for the family to sit and enjoy each other’s company as the day winds down. Finally, Pang met the homeowners’ request to bring art into the design by hanging a few of their favorite pieces throughout the home, giving the space a gallery-like feel.
Every one of Pang’s updates has helped create a home that resonates with the residents and meets their needs in both looks and function. But, more importantly, the changes prove that a designer can create an incredibly beautiful space with just a few elements and a well-planned design.

Pal Pang’s Minimalist Design Improves a Hong Kong Home
When Pal Pang, founder and principal of Another Design International, took on the task of remodeling a 1,000-square-foot residence for a young family in Hong Kong, his primary goal was to improve the design while proving the old adage that less is more.
Today, the apartment, which sits in a peaceful residential area surrounded by schools, is a study in minimalist design. Pang limited the home’s materials to tile, timber, and paint, and narrowed down its color scheme to a mood-lifting white in the public spaces and a soft, soothing camel in the private rooms; the combination of the materials and the simple hues creates a timeless aesthetic within the home.
When Pang began the project, the homeowners asked him to incorporate more space, light, and art into their single-story home. So the designer made plans to enlarge the couple’s master bedroom and bathroom and maximize the home’s storage spaces to help keep rooms clean and organized. He also made better use of the square footage by carving out space for a petite sleeping space off the kitchen and by opening the kitchen up to the dining area to create a feeling of continuity between the two spaces.
